Overview of the course
This course provides participants with a sound understanding of the fundamental anatomy of human movement, which should be mastered before attempting further studies.
Whilst the content and presentation have been developed to accommodate individuals with little or no previous knowledge, many experienced professionals have also found this module extremely worthwhile.
Throughout, the emphasis is not on simply learning but on understanding, which forms an essential foundation for all future studies.

- Skeletal system and its divisions
- Effects of exercise on bone tissue
- Classification of bones and their surface markings
- Vertebral column
- Function, type and properties of muscle tissue
- Muscle action spectrum
- Roles of muscles
- Muscle synergies and force couples
- Muscle fibre types
- Central and peripheral nervous systems
- Joints and joint movements
- Planes and axes of movement
- How muscles are named
- Introduction to 20 of the main muscles
Accreditation and assessment
Foundations of Anatomy is recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) as continuous professional development (cpd).
Attending this course can achieve 16 cpd points. There is a multiple choice assessment on completion.
Distance learning of the resource manual, to enhance knowledge of the subject, requires about 12 hours of self-study. 4 cpd points can be achieved. There is a multiple choice assessment on completion.
Students are welcome to both attend and self-study the same course, achieving 20 (16+4) cpd points. The self-study element serves to reinforce the knowledge component.
Pre-requisites
Course attendance or self-study are both suitable for Level 2 instructors, or above, as recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals.
Those who are not members of the Register of Exercise Professionals are also welcome to attend.
