Overview of the course

Increasingly, exercise professionals are required to play a greater role in rehabilitation, corrective exercise and write programmes for the more demanding customer.

These responsibilities often involve further self-study and working more closely with health professionals, such as physiotherapists. If exercise professionals are to take on these responsibilities successfully, it is essential that they have an excellent understanding of kinesiology and anatomy, particularly musculo-skeletal anatomy.

This course provides the information necessary to meet these demands and by far exceeds that covered in standard fitness courses. The content is brought to life with demonstrations and the application of the knowledge to everyday situations.

Essential Anatomy builds upon the 'Foundations of Anatomy' course and together they provide a depth of knowledge and an understanding of anatomy that ensures maximum benefit is gained from all future training.

Content

This course covers the following:

  • The normal ranges of motion in adults
  • Structure - intervertebral discs, ligaments and joints of the torso
  • Musculature of the torso
  • Stabilisers (primary and secondary) and mobilisers
  • Proposed mechanisims of stabilisation
  • Structure - joints and ligaments of the shoulder girdle and shoulder joint
  • Gleno-humeral rhythm
  • Musculature of the shoulder girdle and shoulder joint
  • Structure - joints and ligaments of the pelvis and hips
  • Musculature of the pelvis and hips
  • Detailed explanation of the joints, movements and muscles of the head and neck
  • Detailed explanation of the joints, movements and muscles of the legs and arms

Accreditation and assessment

Essential Anatomy is recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) as continuous professional development (cpd).

Attending this course can achieve 16 cpd points. There is a multiple choice assessment on completion.

Distance learning of the resource manual, to enhance knowledge of the subject, requires about 16 hours of self-study. 4 cpd points can be achieved. There is a multiple choice assessment on completion.

Students are welcome to both attend and self-study the same course, achieving 20 (16+4) cpd points. The self-study element serves to reinforce the knowledge component.

Pre-requisites

Course attendance is suitable for Level 3 instructors, as recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals.

Self-study of the resource manual is suitable for Level 2 instructors, or above, as recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals.

Those who are not members of the Register of Exercise Professionals are also welcome to attend.
