Overview of the course

The Food Standards Agency’s own Eatwell plate provides the model followed throughout this course.

To deliver nutritional information with confidence, a thorough underpinning knowledge of the subject is essential. This course discusses the macro and micro nutrients, fluid, caffeine, alcohol, food labels, in fact all the essential components, providing the knowledge to confidently deliver the healthy eating message.

The Eatwell plate is meticulously explained, its practical application for dietary analysis and responsible nutritional advice is described fully. Throughout the course, there is the ample opportunity to practice the necessary skills and, crucially, discuss ‘how and when’ to apply the strategies to real life situations.

Written and presented by Registered Nutritionists, Essential Nutrition successfully combines all of the information needed to responsibly guide the public towards a healthier diet.

Content

This course covers the following:

  • Why use the Eatwell plate?
  • Who is the Plate Model appropriate for?
  • An overview of the five main food groups
  • Current health guidelines for quantity and balance, nutritional content and useful advice for each of the five groups
  • Fundamentals of macro and micro nutrients including dietary reference values
  • Assessments of diet including lifestyle questionnaire, diet diaries and dietary analysis
  • Understanding food labels
  • Alcohol, water, caffeine
  • Cholesterol - all the necessary facts
  • Guidelines for pre and post exercise nutrition

Accreditation and assessment

Essential Nutrition is recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) as continuous professional development (cpd).

Attending this course can achieve 16 cpd points. As the course provides both knowledge and skills, there is a practical assessment, a multiple choice assessment and a case study to be submitted within 30 days of attending.

Distance learning of the resource manual, to enhance knowledge of the subject, requires about 20 hours of self-study. 4 cpd points can be achieved. There is a multiple choice assessment on completion.

Students are welcome to both attend and self-study the same course, achieving 20 (16+4) cpd points. The self-study element serves to reinforce the knowledge component.

Pre-requisites

Course attendance is suitable for Level 3 instructors, as recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals.

Self-study of the resource manual is suitable for Level 2 instructors, or above, as recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals.

Those who are not members of the Register of Exercise Professionals are also welcome to attend.
