Understanding Spinal Loads
With the increasing prevalence of low back pain, it is essential that every exercise professional has an understanding of the loads that everyday activities and exercise can place upon the structures of the spine.

This seminar will turn all existing exercise selection on its head.

Overview of the seminar

This seminar discusses the various types of load imparted upon the spinal structures and their causes. Acceptable load and models of constant and intermittent loading are discussed before many common exercises are placed within a low-high load continuum. With a fresh understanding of loading, exercise selection is debated and a number of very effective 'low load' exercises are demonstrated.

A discussion of some of the additional programming considerations such as time of day, age, exercise history and prior injury rounds off the seminar.

Content

This seminar covers the following:

  • Common causes of low back pain
  • Types of spinal load
  • Factors contributing to spinal load
  • Models of spinal loading
  • Guidelines for acceptable loading
  • A low-high load exercise continuum
  • Programming considerations
