Overview of the course
For exercise professionals to adequately meet the needs of the public, it is essential that they have a sound understanding of the physiological principles of flexibility training, and can accurately assess muscle length and employ a variety of stretching techniques.
This mainly practical course covers the necessary science behind flexibility and stretching and provides a toolkit of valid methods of muscle length assessment.
A detailed review of many stretching techniques and a discussion on pre-stretching, enables the development of appropriate strategies for any situation.
Over the two days there is ample opportunity to practice and master the skills as well as time to discuss how the theory is applied to real life situations.

This course covers the following:
- Physiological and neurophysiological mechanisms of stretching
- Factors affecting joint range of movement
- Contra-indications to stretching
- Techniques to assess muscle length
- Use of goniometers
- Functional movement assessments
- Development of functional flexibility
- Application of an integrated approach to flexibility
- Static, active, passive, combination and dynamic stretching
- Variety of advanced partner stretching techniques, including PNF
- The revolutionary technique of active isolated stretching
- Scientific analysis of the pre-stretch debate
Accreditation and assessment
Flexibility: The Art and Science of Stretching is recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) as continuous professional development (cpd).
Attending this course can achieve 16 cpd points. As the course provides both knowledge and skills, there is a practical assessment, a multiple choice assessment and a case study to be submitted within 30 days of attending.
Distance learning of the resource manual, to enhance knowledge of the subject, requires about 16 hours of self-study. 4 cpd points can be achieved. There is a multiple choice assessment on completion.
Students are welcome to both attend and self-study the same course, achieving 20 (16+4) cpd points. The self-study element serves to reinforce the knowledge component.
Pre-requisites
Course attendance is suitable for Level 3 instructors, as recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals.
Self-study of the resource manual is suitable for Level 2 instructors, or above, as recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals.
Those who are not members of the Register of Exercise Professionals are also welcome to attend.
